In scripture the Hebrew term angel mal’ak messenger or Greek angelos can refer to an ordinary messenger e.g. 1 Kings 19:2 but also a divinely sent messenger  e.g. a prophet, Haggai 1:13 or simply the Lord’s messanger  Malachi 3:1.

However, the Bible also refers to angelic beings who are spiritual. They assist God and praise Him in a way which is beyond human capacity. They are celestial beings with specific but limited roles in supporting mankind. These type of Angels are said to be mentioned 273 times in 34 of the Bible’s books.

How many of these angels are there in total?

Revelation 5:11 implies that heaven’s angels are beyond calculating. These multitudes of spiritual beings have not fallen into sin or become evil. Thy are permanently holy and continue to serve and praise God.

I saw and heard a voice of many angels round about the throne and living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands’ 

There’s no definite fixed number of these angels. Scripture however shows that these angels constitute an innumerable company, a mighty host. Job 25:3 Hebrews 12:22 Revelation 5:11

1. Angels are not infinite as God is, nor self existent, but they are created and dependant creatures. Psalm 148:2,5. Colossians 1:16.

2 Angels were present at the creation of the world Job 38:1,4,7.

3. Angels possess intelligence Daniel 9:21-22, Revelation 19:10, Revelation 22:8-9

4. Unlike God angels are not omnipresent,omnipotent or omniscient, Daniel 10:12, Daniel 10:13; Jude 9, Mathew 24:36

5. Unlike God angels are not to be worshipped Colossians 2:18 Revelation 19:10 Revelation 22:9

6.There are different orders and classes of angels, Isaiah 6:2, 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 1 Peter 3:22, Jude 9, Revelation 12:7. Some are known as Cherubim and Seraphim. Others are referred to as principalities, powers, thrones and dominions which refers to classes of angels which occupy places of authority in the angelic world. Ephesians 3:10, Colossians 2:10, Colossians 1:16, Ephesians 1:21;
